For seven years now, new users have not been able to pay for a Spotify subscription through the Apple App Store. But during this time, the old-timers of the application could afford to extend the premium functions through this payment system. Now the company is completely abandoning this method.
Those who used Apple payments received emails asking them to switch to PayPal or credit cards.
Subscribers are informed that their accounts, after the end of the paid period, will be automatically switched to free mode with advertising and restrictions. To continue using the service in premium mode, you will need to re-subscribe after resuming the free mode.
According to representatives of the music listening app, only a small percentage of users use the Apple payment method.
Spotify decided back in 2016 to stop paying for subscriptions through the AppStore, because Apple demanded as much as 30% commission for payment. That is, people paid $ 3 in order for the revenue of the service not to decrease.
The service has often filed lawsuits against Apple, accusing them of monopolization and harming competition by using its dominant position in the market. Although Google Play also has a commission for paying for a Spotify subscription, the companies agree to reduce these values and give the right to choose payment.
